Differences between Direct to Film (DTF) and Direct to Garment (DTG) printing techniques. Which is better?

Differences between Direct to Film (DTF) and Direct to Garment (DTG) printing techniques. Which is better?

We’ve talked about DTF all this time, but sometimes, you may get confused when coming across the concept of DTG. You don’t know the difference? Let us help you out!

First of all, let us remind you that DTF stands for Direct To Film, which is a printing technique that requires a film that transfers any design over cotton, polyester, and more fabrics, after pressing them with high temperatures. Nowadays, it’s a very popular way of customizing your garments.

And then we have DTG, which stands for Direct To Garmet. This is a modern technique that uses a specialized water-based ink jet printer that customizes fabrics directly.

But what makes these two techniques so different? These is what we've learned:

PROS:

DTF

  • - Does not require preparing the garment beforehand.
  • - Saves money and time.
  • - Usable on plenty of materials: cotton, polyester, denim, nylon, leather, and more.
  • - Detailed designs work best with this technique.

DTG

  • - Soft finish.
  • - Bulk orders work best with this technique.

CONS:

DTF

  • - Requires transfer film.
  • - Limited design versatility.

DTG

  • - Only works over cotton or cotton mix fabrics.
  • - Requires a previous fabric treatment.
  • - Ironing garment after printing to settle the design.

In conclusion, both techniques are helpful when it comes to customizing apparel and one should take into consideration many aspects before choosing one or the other. Material, production volumes, expected final results, and white base designs are the factors that you must consider. In reality, they both have different appliances and various purposes. Choose the one that fits your project the most.
